Assistant Professor of History

Dr. Akanshi Vidyarthi holds both MPhil and PhD from the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her PhD is titled, “Maternity and childcare Hospitals in Colonial Awadh (1885-1947)”. It looks into the historical developments around the coming of western medicine and childbirth practices in colonial North India. Her work also studied traditional childbirth practices and practitioners at the intersection of gender and anti-colonial politics of late nineteenth and twentieth century India. She qualified UGC-NET in 2019. She is also a gold medalist in her M.A. program. 

Dr. Akanshi had presented research papers at both national and international conferences. Some of them includes presentations at the Indian History Congress, Asian Association of World Historians (2022), American Association for the History of Medicine (2023). She attended the Society for Social History of Medicine Biennial Conference ‘Resistance’ held in Glasgow (2024) to present her research paper. Furthermore, she also has publication at the Indian History Congress Proceedings (2018).

Her area of interest includes South Asian history, Modern Indian History, Medicine and Colonialism, History of Primary Education, History of Twentieth Century World, Legal History. She had also taught at the Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB), University of Delhi.
